Individual & Sole Trader Tax Returns

Your tax return is the one piece of paperwork every year that can put money back in your pocket – or cost you, if something is missed. We prepare and lodge personal tax returns for employees, investors and sole traders, and we check every deduction you are entitled to so you don't overpay.

Employees

Salary or wages and a few work expenses? We go through what you can claim for your job, lodge quickly and tell you what to keep for next year.

Sole traders and contractors

Your business income and expenses go into your own return, with a business schedule. We work out what is deductible, whether you need GST registration, and how to set money aside for PAYG instalments.

Investors

Rental properties, shares, managed funds or crypto, in Australia or overseas. We make sure income, deductions and capital gains are declared correctly.

What it costs

How it works

  1. Get in touch. Send the form below, call us, or come in to our office in Bondi Junction. We work with clients across Australia remotely as well.
  2. Send your documents. We tell you exactly what we need – most of the income figures we can retrieve directly from the ATO once you authorise us as your tax agent.
  3. We prepare the return. We go through your deductions with you and ask about anything that looks missing.
  4. You approve, we lodge. You see the result before it goes to the ATO, and we lodge it electronically.

What to have ready

  • Your tax file number, and your ABN if you have one
  • Income from anything not reported to the ATO by an employer – for example cash work, tips or overseas income
  • Receipts or records for work-related expenses, a car logbook or kilometres diary, and a record of hours if you work from home
  • Your private health insurance statement
  • Rental property income and expense statements, and records of any shares or crypto you sold
  • Sole traders: your business income and expenses for the year – your bookkeeping file, or bank statements and invoices if you don't keep one

Our tax time checklist goes through this in more detail.

When it is due

The Australian income year runs from 1 July to 30 June. If you lodge your own return it is usually due by 31 October. If you are on a registered tax agent's list before then, your due date can be later – for many people as late as 15 May the following year, depending on your lodgement history. Talk to us before 31 October if you want the later date.

For sole traders

Running a business as a sole trader keeps things simple – you report the business on your own return – but it brings obligations an employee doesn't have:

  • Tax is not taken out for you. Once your business income is established the ATO may put you on PAYG instalments; either way, plan to set money aside as you earn it.
  • GST. You must register once your turnover reaches the GST threshold, and then lodge Business Activity Statements.
  • Records. You need to keep records of income and expenses for five years. Simple bookkeeping makes tax time quicker and cheaper.
  • Is it still the right structure? As income grows, a company or trust can make more sense. The sole trader structure and ABN vs TFN explain the trade-offs, and we can review your structure with you.

Questions people ask

Do I need to come to the office?

No. You are welcome to visit us in Bondi Junction, but most returns can be done by phone, email and secure upload. We work with clients across Australia.

How long does it take?

A straightforward return is usually ready soon after we have your documents. If anything is missing we will ask straight away rather than at the end.

Can I pay from my refund?

Yes. For a $44 service fee, our fee is deducted from your refund, so you pay nothing up front.

I have not lodged for a few years. Can you help?

Yes. We can work out which years are outstanding, prepare them and deal with the ATO for you. The sooner it is sorted, the fewer penalties are likely.

Do you need my myGov password?

No, never. Once you authorise us as your tax agent we can see the information we need through the ATO's systems for tax practitioners.
